Anatomy of a Kdrama Kiss

Nothing beats falling in love… and along with falling in love comes the anticipation of your first kiss…

There is a song that goes “A kiss is just a kiss… ” but i say… NOT!

There are lukewarm kisses and passionate kisses, hard ones and soft ones… tender ones wherein you feel as if love is going to overflow out of your chest and violent ones wherein all of your pent-up frustrations and anger is released in just a single act…

Kissing scenes in movies and dramas have always fascinated me… Malice aside, i think there is no better way to express love than really, in the deed of pressing your lips against that of another… Nothing could be more intimate nor personal than that…

In a society where kissing is considered as a sacred act, i have always been deeply curious about it when i was younger… it may be due to the fact that i was longing to see what my mom’s hands are keeping from me whenever there’s something she feels i should not watch on TV… or because of the excitement and anticipation i felt for it when i was a teen-ager or the overwhelming emotions i felt and until now remember when i first had it…

Majority of people that i see depicted in Kdramas can perhaps relate to this emotion… somehow i think everyone could… and maybe that’s the reason why up to now, kissing scenes are still my most favorite scenes in any romantic series or movie i get to watch…

However, just like a kiss in real life, Kdramas also have it’s hit and misses when it comes to smooching and since we are talking about the best… I am posting my Top 5 Best Kisses in a Kdrama once again and it is ranked from hot to hottest…

SMOKING: THE LAST SCANDAL OF MY LIFE

Who says ahjummas can’t have a lovelife? Sun Hee went through hell before she had her second glory with Jae Bin…

The story of two people whose love for each other was found then lost and finally rediscovered… SunHee and Jae Bin waited for years before they can affirm their love for each other …

In the scene where they had their honeymoon, the tenderness in which Jae Bin and Sun Hee shed their clothes as if they’re opening themselves to each other, the music that was played in the background, the whispering and comforting words that they exchanged with each other, Everything was set up to Perfection that by the time they kissed, i had tears in my eyes from feeling the depth and extent of their emotions for each other…

In an affirmation that love does not know age nor boundary, the Last Scandal of my life is definitely on my list…

PS: Thank you Choi Jin Shil… for leaving a wonderful memory through this series before you sadly left us… may you rest in peace.

BURNING: MY SWEET SEOUL

Oh! The Laws of Attraction… What is a girl to do if you met a stranger whom you feel the strongest fascination for at first sight… get bashed with him while having the best conversation of your life and then walk out to find out that it’s nearly dawn and that you both have no choice but to go some place else to spend the night in your drunken stupor?

On a day when Eun Soo is abandoned by friends in a bar, she gets to meet Tae Oh who incidentally is 7 years younger than her but immediately hits it off with him as if he could have been “THE ONE”…

We can all probably relate to the idea of meeting someone great and not wanting the night to end and that’s what Eun Soo and Tae Oh did albeit to the next level…

The awkwardness that came in between them after the rapport of the night when they went to that motel… the stilted excuses they made in their heads about just wanting to rest though they both knew they had other things in mind… the thought of having a one night stand with a person that they feel the strongest enthrallment for… All of these contributed to the wonder, discovery and excitement of that first although sudden kiss that they shared in a sleazy stairwell which made their hearts race and mine as well as they explore the passion of an undiscovered new love that was just about to happen…

FLAMING: SOULMATES

What’s more romantic than the idea of Soulmates? And what can be more heartbreaking than the thought of finding that one person who’s meant for you in a time or place that you were simply not meant to be?

That is the exact premise of Soulmates and just like the movie Sleepless in Seattle… i was waiting with bated breath the entire time i was watching this series just for the two leads to get together… You can see they’re meant for each other, that they have to be together but why, oh why? Does everything have to be so complicated…

With the recognition that Soo Kyung is the love of his life and that his marrying Yu-Jin would be the biggest mistake of his life… Dong Wook waited for Soo Kyung on the steps leading to her home in order to make her admit that they are meant to be together…

Seeing Soo Kyung torn between going after him, the man who is her destiny and hurting a person whom she considers as her best friend… Dong wook went in for the kiss in a last ditch effort to convince Soo Kyung that there could not have been a better match made in heaven than them…

The frustration, the heartache, the longing mixed with the hope of making their love come true… Plus the fact that i think Shin Dong Wook is cute (hehe!)… all of these emotions contributed to making this kiss truly noteworthy in my book…

BLAZING : QUE SERA SERA

And i’ve never loved Eric Mun more than after watching him in this series… The series is not really great nor commendable… it was passable at most but he’s never been Hotter than ever!

Que Sera Sera is the story of a hot gigolo who leaves the love of his life for money but in a cruel twist of fate gets thrown together with that same person in an unexpected situation…

Tae Joo is an ordinary employee who always dreamt of making it big… Love is nothing but a tool for him to reach the big time and unluckily, his girlfriend Eun Soo will not bring him there…

When Eun Soo hooked up with the adopted son of Tae Joo’s new big time girlfriend and they all went to Singapore for work and vacation… All hell breaks loose in a love quadrangle that was messier than EDSA right after People Power…

The agony of regret and the pain of jealousy is evident in Tae Joo’s every action right before this kissing scene… When he went to bang on Eun Soo’s hotel door and threw her on the bed in an almost rape… I was literally transfixed… agog… wanting to be Eun Soo at that very moment who was in between love and hate…

When Tae Joo’s girlfriend Hye Lin, walked in to that scene and started screaming bloody murder, i thought i’d be shortchanged… but oh no! The writer went even a step further and made Eric’s character drag Eun Soo out in the rain, confess his love point blank, follow her around while getting wet, then give her a kiss with all the anger, frustration and affection that he felt…

Violent but Sweet… Que Sera Sera is number 2 on my list…

RAGING: MY NAME IS KIM SAM SOON

At a time when Kdramas are notorious for ripping off viewers in line with the kiss department, My Name is Kim Sam Soon, i think, is a pioneer in giving the audience their money’s worth in terms of depicting real life passion…

Aside from the fact that it’s Hyun Bin doing the kissing, It’s the situations that go along with the kisses which i think make this drama’s smackeroos truly stand out from that of the rest…

Long live Womens Lib in that scene in episode 6 when Sun Ah went in for the kill… That scene truly defied the norm that men should always be the one to make the first move when it comes to getting physical…

The surprise on Jin Hyun’s face when Sam Soon went for his lips is truly hilarious and yet awe inspiring… And that popping sound that their lips made when they parted? It made me blush and grin like a silly fool from where i was seated…

But when Sam Shik pulled Sam Soon in to his embrace when she was about to go… that moment signified when the situation changed and Sam Shik became the one truly in control (well, until the NG’s were shown… hehehe!)

But wait there’s more! Binnie surpassed himself on Episode 12 when he dragged an unsuspecting and obviously PO’d SamSoon into the mens bathroom not to give her a beating but to give her the kissing of her life! The agressiveness in which he pulled Sam Soon to him then planted his lips on hers which rendered her quiet… his hands caressing the side of her [spoiler start] breasts [spoiler end] while he made a veritable feast of her lips… I HAVE NEVER WANTED BINNIE MORE THAN IN THAT MOMENT!

And just when you thought the fun was over, the director and writer added in that moviehouse make out scene for good measure… it was supposed to be funny yes… but all i found was myself green with envy and wanting to be in Sun Ah’s place right then and there… Like a pair of High School kids who can barely contain their passion … Sam Shik and Samsoon had never been more relatable and real than in that very moment…

No wonder from then till now, My name is Kim Sam Soon would always be the best for me in terms of kissing scenes and Binnie, the actor with the best kisses that i’m sure i’d never get in this lifetime but still hope i can feel…!

Honorable Mention

WARM: LOVE STORY IN HARVARD

Proving that passion can strike at any moment even while you’re cleaning the bathroom… Love Story in Harvard’s kisses are sometimes playful and yet at the same time full of emotion…

From the illicitness of hiding in the bathroom to the consummation of a love that spans illness and the odds against them… Love Story in Harvard depicts the story of the journey from a new found love to a love that will last a lifetime…

EXTRA: I always thought that Kim Rae Won is a good kisser and his kisses in Which Star Are You From are not bad as well…

SWELTERY: PRINCESS HOURS

Kudos to Yoon Eun Hye for never faking it in any of her series… She had always delivered from Princess Hours to Coffee Prince and if we think about it, maybe that’s the reason why she’s raking it in as of the moment… (hehehe!)

The possessiveness of Shin’s kisses towards Chae Gyung in Goong really gets to me… it’s as if he’s branding her… owning her… it’s always soooo deep and ardent, it’s as if he never wants to let her go…

But more than those kisses what i liked most was the public kiss scene at the end of the series… Being in a crowd of people and lost in a world of their own and with those voice overs affirming their feelings for each other… that scene for me is the highlight of the series which made me wish as well that all scenes of the series were that interesting…

TRIVIA: This scene was referenced in Flowers For My Life and Hana wanted the same to happen to her…

SULTRY: LOVERS

If only this series was interesting enough, this kiss might have made it to the list of my Top 5. Sadly, the storyline of this series failed to interest me, hence i can only reference on the hotness of this scene based on that context…

From the moment Lee Seo Jin’s character knocked on Kim Jung Eun’s bedroom door and she opened it, the smoochfest began… they must have kissed passionately in every corner of the room before finally making it to bed and what can be hotter than that?

No words exchanged, no explanations… just pure mouth on mouth action… HOT! Now, if only Lee Seo Jin was a teeny weeny bit more attractive… hehehe!

I love this entry, I totally agree with many of your picks as well. A few I haven’t seen yet, so they can’t make my list, but here’s my list.. http://kormerica.wordpress.com/best-of-lists/

Sam soon was my favorite too and I totally agree that Lovers would have made my list but the series got in the way, I thought Soulmates was shot from too far away to qualify, not certifiable lip action. Thank you for this awesome post!

I’m guessing this is an old post since there are some key 2010 kisses missing here 😀
